Holland Home History

On February 1, 1892, twenty-six people gathered in a local parsonage to discuss a pressing challenge – their parents, grandparents and other elderly members of the community had no appropriate home in which to live and no one committed solely to their care. These concerned people formed the Holland Union Benevolent Association, dedicated to creating a "good Christian home in which the aged … could spend their days in comfort and free of care." Ten months later they honored their commitment with the $4,500 purchase of the first home for eight elderly residents. That spark ignited a flame that has burned ever more brightly over the years, providing an ever expanding network of services guided by a mission to provide excellent care, serve others with love and compassion, and to follow Christ's teachings and example.

Holland Home Today

From humble beginnings more than 110 years ago, Holland Home, through God's preserving hand and bountiful goodness, has grown to become an acknowledged leader in long-term care. We are the largest provider in Michigan and rank 36th in the nation, providing care for over 1,500 residents and 250 Hospice and HomeCare patients every day.

Today Holland Home offers a broad spectrum of programs and services that include independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care, homecare, rehabilitative care, dementia care and hospice services. Holland Home owns and operates three residential communities in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Holland Home has operated continuously since 1892 as a non-profit organization. While we have relied in part on the financial contributions and volunteer efforts of the members of several religious denominations, the corporation is independently owned and operated.

Each of our 950 employees is committed to providing exceptional care in a spirit of Christian ministry, ensuring that our residents and clients will feel love, comfort, and peace of mind. In that way, we continue to reflect the legacy of our founders, whose "faith and self-denial inspire the coming generation" (J. Hertstein, 1922)
